10 thoughts about… KINGDOM #8

Hi!
I’m back with 10 thoughts about MNET KINGDOM, today specifically about the latest episode, #8.

On the first post (here if you haven’t read it already) I covered how I found out about the show, the groups I like more, and had a bit of a rant against fandom toxicity, and against MNET. If you’re on the community, you know how MNET can be, and may have rants of your own against them, so have it in mind.

Are you ready for my 10 thoughts about the latest episode?
Allons-y!

Do watch out for major spoilers ahead if you haven’t watched the episode yet.

Kingdom: Legendary War - Wikipedia

Kingdom: Legendary War is a Mnet tv show that’s hosted since April 1 2021, every thursday at 20:00 KST. The show is a battle between 6 masculinos kpop groups: Stray Kids, Ateez, The Boyz, iKON; SF) and BTOB. There’s 4 battles of performances, with the last battle being transmited live. The winner will have a reality show and a special show intitules Kingdom Week for themselves.
The way the groups are ranked is based on the following criteria: 25% group evaluation (each group picks 3 performances they liked), 25% specialist evaluation, 40% global evaluation (each person can vote 3 teams in a app), and 10% performances views.

🌑🌔🌕🌖🌑🌔🌕🌖🌑🌔🌕🌖🌑🌔🌕🌖🌑🌔🌕🌖🌑

🌑1🌑

Mayfly won the three units against It’s One. Their dance unit win actually surprised me, I mean, both were good, but the clear concept of It’s one focused only on dance, and had a royal korean theme, while Mayfly went overboard with singing and a lot of fantastical props in a MV like performance, but in my view, there were more skits (can’t find a word that describes what I want) than dance flow. Do I make sense?
SF9 Hwi, I also don’t get the win. Not complaining, though. Good for everyone for all the amazing work.

🌔2🌔

Although someone had to win and lose, the two teams performances were in perfect harmony.”
MNET, were you talking for the people in the back? Trying to quiet them for the preferences you’re showing?
The voting systems are crazy, we already knew that, and there’s fires going around on social media after every episode, and between them too. It’s annoying.
MNET tried to appease by showing who the judges would be for this episode, but I think it was worse, as the judges are getting a lot of hate, even when we got to see why some voted who they voted for. I wish people would learn that their opinions are just that, and not facts. Yes, there’s a lot to rant about the show, but don’t send hate to the groups and idols involved.

🌕3🌕

I don’t remember the name from the SF9 vocal, but I hate the show for putting his crying on the spot, oh my fªªª hell, it made me so uncomfortable watching. I wanted to hug him so bad. His voice cracked, as it can happen in live performances, and you can see it in his face how desolate he felt for missing the note. Was it really necessary to show so much of that? It’s the third idol that MNET exploits their angst for views.

🌖4🌖

We then had iKON preparing and performing their “NO LIMIT” stage, and my first thought was Bobby is such a freaking mood, he doesn’t give a care anymore. He even told his team to pick their things up and leave after knowing the results of the unit xD
I do get it thought. iKON, albeit getting better results in the last episodes, still haven’t gotten first in any of the battles, and there’s a preference being shown in the show that can’t be ignored when we watch it. iKON’s gaining more fans and worldwide recognition nevertheless, so they don’t care that much about being first, and are focusing on enjoying and showing the world how good their group is.

🌖5🌖

I wish that iKon had mixed Lisa’s part with their own while performing, instead of being two blocks separated. One could have appeared in Lisa’s set, or something. They did use that time to change clothes, so that was cool.
When finishing, they could have gone to the throne and then hit the remote, but it was a amazing concept using the tv and the remote in the performance.
Also, ALSO! Bobby fell asleep in the begining of their performance xD I don’t think that was staged by their laughs.

🌑6🌑

How in the world can two teams choose Blackpink songs? And both with a remote prop inside their performances? With so many k-pop groups around, it seems like too much of a coincidence.
Also, do they get paid for promoting brands? Seungmin and Jong Ho had Channel jackets, and we see a lot of brands in the performances, when they could easily be hidden. Makes me think….

🌔7🌔

STRAY KIDS, EVERYWHERE, ALL AROUND THE WORLD!

I don’t know how to coordinate my thoughts on Skz performance, it was just so… SO! Bang Chan looked so proud of the rascals presentation before going into the stage, and boy was he right in being proud xD Let me break it by points:

  • They had a deadpool theme, and even inserted a ant-man joke
  • Bang Chan broke the 4th wall mid performance, and called JYP idiot while at it (it was written in one of the bubbles)
  • Felix hair looked amazing with red in it
  • Lee Know crazyness appeared, making a OH face surrounded by weapons, “like home alone”
  • A dancer made the “sending money” to Bang Chan’s ass, who was in a pole.
  • Did Han become the Sheriff from Bugs Bunny with that hat?

The performance was really good, and it brought so much attention to stray kids this week, from Ryan Reynolds to Hugh, Gordon Ramsey, Zedd… Boys finished the episode winning, even if they don’t win the battle in itself.

🌕8🌕

I love how 3Racha are so supportive of their team, cheering Seugmin on his rehearsal and before the performance, and with Bang upping everyone while performing DuDUDU. I even think Han started crying with Seugmin’s singing, holy mother…

🌖9🌖

Some funny moments that also happened in this episode:

  • Someone saying “Should we mute?” when they were about the announce the results
  • Hello, Director.” xD
  • Seungmin entering the entering the cabinet before his performance because of his anxiety. Like nope, nope, I’m hiding…. Dammit, too small for me.
  • Q singing “black pink in your area” was so cute xD
  • iKON dressing up in white and beige, soft colours… and one in pure lime form. My dude!
  • The water ad by iKON. Just that.
  • Bang Chan face when he got an idea for the DDUDUDU sound xD I need it as an emoji asap
  • Haaaaan?
  • Ateez calling Felix their son xD oyoyoy!

🌑10🌑

Lastly, and I think I said this before, it’s really cool that the show can be a friendship group between the groups, and giving them opportunities that wouldn’t be otherwise possible, like Skz and Ateez having time with BTOB, and Sunwoo saying how he doesn’t get to do much mature rapping while on The Boyz. Watching them choosing and preparing their performances, and playing around with each other is something I think should be cherished and enjoyed, more than the shitty things about MNET editing.

There! Finito incatatem!

Here’s my whole thoughts about the latest episode, and if you haven’t seen the performances and episodes, you should definitely should go see them. It’s really worth your time and there’s a lot of funny moments, like some I said in point 9.

10 thoughts about… Mnet KINGDOM

Hi!
I’m back with 10 thoughts about… but this time it’ll be my first post about k-pop, or more specifically, about Mnet survival show: KINGDOM.

Let me just start with how I discovered about the show, which was thanks to Stray Kids (Skz). I saw Back Door in Youtube, and it made me fall in love again with K-pop (they even were my first k-pop album bought). In 2020, when Skz participated in MAMA show, they had a dance battle with TBZ and Ateez for the Kingdom crown, and it sent me on a roll! I started listening to Ateez and The Boyz (TBZ), discovered about Road to Kingdom, which TBZ won against other amazing groups, and led me into following Kingdom news until its start, this April.

Are you ready for my 10 thoughts about the show?
Allons-y!

Do watch out for major spoilers ahead.

🌑1🌑

The show has 6 bands competing together to win the crown, but let’s be honest, each band has it’s own unique concept that comparing them seems just wrong:
– BTOB and iKON are established bands that are unique in the show, iKON focusing on hip hop and BTOB on soulful and melodical songs;
– SF9 seems have a sensual concept, but I didn’t know about them before the show so can’t be sure;
– Ateez, BTZ and SKZ are similar with fantasy concept, but Skz have a darker vibe to them, Ateez love the pirates concept and TBZ have been working a “game of thrones” in their presentations. I did come to the show with these three as favourites, so there’s that.

🌔2🌔

Skz, TBZ and Ateez are also the newer groups compared to the other three, with Ateez being the babies here- am I the only one who thinks it’s wrong to compare three older groups with three newer ones? While 3 groups are accomplished and have a stable fanbase, they do have different difficulties that make the show participation worth it:
– Stray Kids seem to be the only one with a larger global fandom, which sucks for the other groups, but they’re not much known in Korean;
– Ateez are having their comeback at the same time as the show, so they’re overworked, and they’re the babies, so more fans!
– TBZ are really underrated so gaining more fans will be good for them;
– SF9 all have different things going on, they’re more known individually so showing themselves as a group will be good for them- although…. the training issues make them seem less caring than the rest, and they seem more stoic.
– While iKON and BTOB are the older groups, they don’t seem to have a large global fanbase, and they’re having some trouble dealing with the crazyness of the younger ones, so getting to challenge themselves and their concepts is good for getting out of their “box”.

🌕3🌕

I saw a lot of “create 10 accounts to vote so we can win” and it shows how wrong the fan voting is going. Creating multiple accounts to vote ins’t right nor fair when we take into account how some groups have already a bigger fan base than others- for example, while I love that stray kids won first place thanks to voting and views, the boyz went last because of global voting and I don’t think they deserved that place. Again, it’s my opinion. But you should just have one account and give your opinion instead of spamming. And stop copypasting the same comments, holy hell!

🌖4🌖

Last rant: experts voting is… something. I don’t agree with their rankings, and it’s causing a lot of controversies in twitter. I think it would be better to have a judges panel in the show, like 10 judges that have a say in the k-pop world voting and giving one feedback to the group would be more normalised and not have such a big negative impact. I always want to hug the groups when I see them sad for placing 5th and 6th after all the trouble they went through to make that show. I also think the ranking shouldn’t be divided- if you have 4 methods of ranking, wait to have all the votes before showing, it’s not hard. Showing half the votes and give a ranking that could change the next week may be more suspenseful, but fuck, I hate it.
At the same level, is it really necessary to show 6 places? Couldn’t they do a top 3 ranking and change how they do the rankings altogether? Both the app and the group voting is focused on voting the three best presentations, and it’s not like the 5th or 6th place were bad, they just didn’t have the same impact as the top 3. I don’t know, it just seems more stressful to the groups when they get on the lower ranks when the focus shouldn’t be there.

🌑5🌑

Now for the good parts, here’s the moments that were too cute to watch:
– When TBZ were sad for their ranking, they had a “pick-me-up” moment with Road to Kingdom participants, who knew how hard the show can be. They were so cute.
– Skz making rings to show support in their battles (I was sad that they appeared to only make 7 rings, but the statue did have a ring… Hyunjin ring, is that you?).
– Ateez and iKON getting along, the hearts xD I couldn’t stop smiling with their bantering
– BTOB hanging up on Chan xD the shows of friendship in the show are awesome to watch, at least they’ll gain friends.
– Changin leaving to see the Kraken in real life xD I need to make that scene a gif
– the constant reactions of the groups when there’s a presentation going; they’re so supportive!

🌑6🌑

Some shocking moments:
Ateez had a kraken. A mother****** kraken on set!
– iKON turned their set into Inception. I couldn’t stop rewatching to see the movements, it seemed so crazy
SF9 became gangsters. Which I hated the concept because violence and guns ain’t my thing, but ooooh heeelllll!!! That seemed like a movie, not a song set! There was even someone set on fire
– Lee Know’s and Han’s voice in “I’ll be your man”, Skz don’t do sorrowful melodically songs so it was surprising to listen. “Isn’t he a rapper?” xD
– BTOB looked so different in Back Door!! it was crazy! And those abs!!! Jeezzzuuuuzzz
– Penial with pink hair xD and Ateez cut his hair! He went for cutie to badass with a haircut. And Stray Kids now have all dark hair in Kingdom. My god.

🌔7🌔

And… Moments that were… not right:
– TBZ having an existencial crisis because their work isn’t showing up in the ranking. I mean, they got 6th place! what the hell! They didn’t deserve that.
– The constant milking sensitive moments. I hate how mnet in every episode has a boy crying and they just focus on that. I mean, yeah, show us how hard it’s for them, but fuuuck, I.N. was really uncomfortable in the last episode for not being able to sing like he wanted to, was it really necessary to prolong him crying? And showing us the private talk? Ok, you were recording but there was a reason why we only hear their voices- it was private. It also happened to the Boyz and another band that I can’t remember now.
– Hyunjin appearing on the first episode but being erased from the rest because of the “scandal dealing”, even though he won the crown in the 2020 MAMA. He was finally being recognised and then all went to shit. I agree with other fans that he was represented by the statue kid in “I’ll be your man”, so I hope their wish comes true.
– How Sunwoo had to go underwater while being afraid in A song of Ice and Fire. And for no reason because it wasn’t used in the presentation that I noticed.

🌕8🌕

Presentations that were just… Argh!:
The Awakening of Summer by Ateez
The Red Wedding by TBZ. Game of thrones theme, anyone? xD It didn’t deserve a low ranking
From the Wonderland by Ateez (First time I’ve seen a boy with a corset, and I’m sold. Please give me more)
I’ll be your Man, Stray Kids version. They gave their all into it.
Side Effects/God’s Menu by Stray Kids Such good moments, I love their dark vibe mixed with the badasses that they are
BTOB korean aesthetic
Love Scenario by iKON is another one that deserved better, they looked awesome
No air by TBZ. Oh look, a white walker. The POV perspective was really cool to use.

🌖9🌖

I mean, since we’re talking kpop, here’s some boys that have a whole vibe to them:
– Bang Chan and Felix in Stray Kids (of course both needed to be australian xD)
– Bobby and Koo in iKON
– Hong Jong in Ateez
– Min-Hyuk in BTOB
– Sunwoo in TBZ
Oh…. I don’t have one in SF9 :/

🌑10🌑

To finish, it’s awesome seeing some of the work that go into making a performance, it makes me appreciate more the MV the groups put, and getting to know other bands outside of what I already watch is a good bonus.

🌑🌔🌕🌖🌑🌔🌕🌖🌑🌔🌕🌖🌑🌑🌔🌕🌖🌑🌑🌔🌕🌖🌑

There! Finito incatatem!

I think these 10 points englobes both my rants and some performances and moments you should definitely click to see! They are worth your time if you’re into fantasy and kpop, that’s for sure!
Do you like kpop? Are you watching the Kingdom too? Who’s your favourite band?
And if you don’t like kpop, what’s your favourite music genre? I love rock, but kpop is really my go-to genre since the pandemic started. Tastes, right?
